How It Began

From a Class of Thirty to an Inter College

Raised one stage at a time over more than a century, on land the village gave and largely by the effort of the people who lived around it.

Around 1918–19, in the time of Maharaja Narendra Shah of Tehri, a primary school opened at Jakholi. It taught up to standard 3, and its pupils walked to the Raudhdhar school in Khas Patti to sit their examinations. Anything beyond that meant Raudhdhar, or Pratap Middle School in Tehri.

Upper primary classes to standard 5 began in 1937–38, though examinations still meant a journey to Hindolakhal, Raudhdhar or Tehri. In 1948–49, in the Tehri state of an independent India, the school was raised to middle school — and it was then that the name Ramashram was joined to Jakholi.

Why Ramashram

Directly below where the inter college stands today there is a temple of Hanuman, and the primary school once ran on that very spot. During excavation in 1918–19, idols of Ram, Lakshman, Sita and Hanuman were uncovered there, suggesting a temple of Ram had stood on the site long before. The place took its name from it.

Thakur Hukum Singh Negi, pradhan of Jakholi and Bajira, gave his own land for the temple and for the school. The building that stands today is also on land the villagers gave. The school has never once been built on ground it had to buy.

It became a high school in 1969 and an intermediate college in 1975. The students who passed through it are now spread across the country and beyond — which is the whole reason this association exists.

Stage by Stage

A Century, One Step at a Time

Every raise in the school's grade took years of asking, and each one is on record. The last two steps are the association's own.

— Ramashram Alumni Association
In English

This association is an alumni association whose main purpose is fellowship and working in a democratic manner. Our aim is to respect one another's feelings and to meet one another. The main purpose is to increase dialogue and fellowship among former students.

Members are requested to avoid over-enthusiasm, so that we respond with an understanding of each other's thinking, feelings and circumstances.

The idea was taken up in December 2024 by Dr. Mahesh Bhatt, Deepak Bhatt and Shiv Singh Negi. The society was formally registered on 30 July 2025, and its area of work is recorded as all India — members are spread well beyond Uttarakhand.

How It Is Run

Who Decides What

Nothing here is invented for convenience. It is the structure a registered society is required to keep, and the rules name every part of it.

01

General Body

Formed of the life members. It elects the managing committee and its decisions are final.

02

Managing Committee

Elected by the general body. It prepares the annual budget, protects the society's property, keeps the record of work done and has it audited.

03

Office Bearers

President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, with the coordinators the committee appoints.

04

The Accounts

The society's bank account is operated jointly by the President and the Secretary — never by one alone. The financial year runs 1 April to 31 March.

Written into the rules

Non-political, as a condition of existence

The society may be dissolved if half its founder members judge that it has stopped working towards its stated objects — or that it has taken part in political activity. Its assets would then pass to the District Magistrate's fund, to be used for the benefit of schools. Staying out of politics is not a preference here; it is the condition on which the society is allowed to exist.
